Overcoming Obstacles in Life

Life is full of obstacles! Call them challenges or whatever you want, but they stand between you and what you want to get or be or do.

When I’m driving, for instance, my roadblock might be a flat tire, broken air conditioner, getting lost or stuck in a traffic jam, or – worst – being in an accident. With every trip, I hope that none of these things happens, but I have resources ready if one does. I keep my AAA card in my wallet, patience in my head, have let my GPS guide me to a different route when facing heavy traffic, and I do take my cell phone. Somehow, I will reach my destination.

I face challenges in life, too, as we all do. Though I always wanted to write and publish a book, for example, I had no idea of the many skills it would require, most of which I did not possess. Confidence in my ability to learn them lagged, too. Then there was procrastination, a life-long problem for me, which seems intimately related to another personal problem – perfectionism. Not surprisingly, self-discipline was an issue, as well, as writing is such a solitary pursuit and easy to put off. Then, too, the publishing industry itself was going through turmoil, with a shrinking number of publishers and book stores, the huge impact of ebooks, and a proliferation of ways to publish a book. Plus, it all cost money.

Yet I managed to overcome these obstacles and now have two published books to my credit. I’m amazed each time I look at or hold one of them, saying silently, “I really did it!”

What happened to move me from I wish to I did it? A lot! In the next couple weeks, I’ll share some helpful tips on how you, too, can overcome your obstacles and achieve what you want to get or be or do.
